Kelly scored the winning goal as England beat Germany to lift the European Championship trophy in 2022 and she made history during the Lionesses' run to the Women's World Cup final last year, too. When Sarina Wiegman's side faced a penalty shootout against Nigeria in the last 16, it was Kelly who scored the decisive spot-kick. The force behind her strike made it more powerful than any taken by a Premier League player in the 2022-23 season, a feat that has been recognised in a new mural in Manchester.

"To see myself up there is a great achievement,” Kelly told of the mural. "It’s great to see how far the game has come. I think it’s very exciting to see where the game can go, too. I think this is only the beginning of the women’s game, now we’re changing mindsets to ‘it’s just football’. I think it’s great to see the achievements that are being celebrated now for women in sport.”

THE BIGGER PICTURE

As well as being a star for England, Kelly is one of Manchester City's most important players and has been in superb form this season to give the club a real shot of winning a first Women's Super League title since 2016. The 26-year-old has been involved in nine goals – five of her own and four assists – in 13 league appearances this season, a total bettered by only three players across the division.
